Pope Francis, hospitalized for a week at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital for bilateral pneumonia, remains in a concerning condition. During a press conference on February 21, Dr. Sergio Alfieri, the Pope’s official surgeon, stated that the pontiff, aged 88, is “not out of danger” and will remain hospitalized “at least until next week” out of caution. Although he is no longer connected to any life-support machines, the medical team remains vigilant due to his advanced age and complex medical history.

A Slight Improvement, but an Uncertain Recovery

The Pope was initially admitted for bronchitis, but bilateral pneumonia was diagnosed shortly after his arrival. While his condition has shown slight improvement, his medical team insists that the situation remains serious, given his chronic health issues. He continues to receive his closest collaborators, read, sign documents, and make phone calls, but his agenda remains uncertain for the coming weeks.

This hospitalization, the fourth since 2021, has raised growing concerns, especially in light of the various health problems he has already faced, including colon and abdominal surgeries and mobility difficulties.
