Pope Francis hospitalized for bronchitis: his condition remains concerning

A complex clinical picture and prolonged hospitalization

Pope Francis, aged 88, was hospitalized on Friday, February 14, at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital due to bronchitis. Although initial reports were reassuring, the situation gradually became more complicated. On Monday, February 17, the Vatican announced that the Pope was presenting a “complex clinical picture,” a term suggesting that his health condition requires extended care.

A polymicrobial respiratory infection and adjusted treatment

Recent test results revealed a polymicrobial respiratory infection, which led to an adjustment in the Pope’s medical treatment. This new complication prompted the authorities to announce that his hospitalization would be prolonged, at least until Wednesday, February 19. As a result, his weekly general audience scheduled for that day was canceled.

Despite the development of his condition, the Vatican reassured the faithful by stating that Pope Francis remained in “good spirits” and had a “quiet night.” On Sunday, the Pope watched the Mass on television, missing his usual Angelus prayer. On social media, he expressed his gratitude to those who have been supporting him with their prayers and affection during this difficult time.

The Vatican has not specified a release date from the hospital but assured that his clinical condition is stable for now. The faithful and the international community are awaiting further updates on his health in the coming days.
