Donald Trump Suggests Uncertain Future for Ukraine and Confirms Sending Envoy to Kiev
In an interview aired on Fox News on February 10, Donald Trump suggested that Ukraine could one day become “Russian,” while reaffirming his desire to secure the hundreds of billions of dollars the United States has invested in supporting Kiev against Russia. The U.S. president stated, “They might reach an agreement, or not. Ukraine could become Russian, or it might not.” He also emphasized that he wanted access to Ukraine’s rare earth resources—metals crucial for electronic technologies—in exchange for American aid. Trump specified that he had requested access to resources worth about $500 billion.
In a separate development, the U.S. president confirmed that his special envoy, Keith Kellogg, will soon travel to Ukraine to formulate a peace plan aimed at ending the conflict with Russia. Kellogg’s visit, scheduled for February 20 according to a source close to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, will coincide with the third anniversary of Russia’s invasion, on February 24, 2022. At the same time, Volodymyr Zelensky is set to meet U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance at the Munich Security Conference this Friday. Alongside J.D. Vance, Keith Kellogg and Secretary of State Marco Rubio will also be part of the American delegation in Germany, where international security discussions will take center stage.
