Trump Suspends Tariff Increase on Mexico for One Month After Agreement with Claudia Sheinbaum

Donald Trump announced on Monday, February 3, on his Truth Social network a “pause” of one month on the implementation of a 25% tariff on Mexican imports, which was set to take effect the following day. This decision follows what he described as a “very cordial” conversation with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, during which both leaders agreed to start negotiations to reach an agreement.

A compromise between Washington and Mexico

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed the suspension on her X account, stating that “Mexico will immediately strengthen its northern border with 10,000 members of the National Guard.” The goal is to combat drug trafficking, particularly fentanyl, into the United States. In return, Washington has committed to taking measures against arms trafficking into Mexico.

A commercial offensive suspended but not canceled

Last Saturday, Donald Trump announced the imposition of new 25% tariffs on imports from Mexico and Canada, two key U.S. trade partners under the North American free trade agreement. This measure was aimed at reducing the U.S. trade deficit but provoked strong reactions from the affected countries.

Mexico, the United States’ largest global trading partner, heavily depends on its northern neighbor, which accounts for 83% of its exports, particularly in the automotive, auto parts, and agricultural sectors. The announcement of these tariffs had raised concerns about the economic and diplomatic impact of such a decision.
