Nicolas Florian, a Local Political Figure Who Left His Mark on Bordeaux

Former Bordeaux mayor Nicolas Florian passed away on Sunday, January 26, at the age of 55 in a city hospital, following a massive stroke on Friday. His family confirmed the news, stating that the Les Républicains (LR) politician collapsed on his way to the office.

A Political Career Shaped by Alain Juppé

A close ally of Alain Juppé, whom he regarded as his mentor, Nicolas Florian was chosen to succeed him after Juppé’s unexpected departure to the Constitutional Council in 2019. Elected by the city council, Florian had just over a year to make his mark in a city historically shaped by prominent political figures such as Jacques Chaban-Delmas and Alain Juppé.

In the 2020 municipal elections, Florian was defeated by Green Party candidate Pierre Hurmic, despite forming a second-round alliance with Macronist candidate Thomas Cazenave. Since then, he had served in the opposition and actively advocated for a partnership between Les Républicains and Renaissance ahead of the 2026 municipal elections.

A Man Deeply Rooted in His Territory

Originally from Lot-et-Garonne but deeply connected to Bordeaux, Florian began his political career as a parliamentary assistant before becoming a municipal councilor in Villenave-d’Ornon, a Bordeaux suburb, at just 25 years old. A graduate in business law, he held numerous local positions, including roles in the metropolitan council, the department, and the region, before becoming deputy mayor in charge of finance and administration under Juppé.

Describing himself as a “man of proximity,” Florian prided himself on practical governance and aimed to serve the daily needs of Bordeaux residents. In 2020, he made headlines by including Guillaume Chaban-Delmas, grandson of the former Prime Minister, on his electoral list.

Tributes Pour In

Political figures across the spectrum paid tribute to Nicolas Florian’s legacy. Valérie Pécresse, president of the Île-de-France region and a close ally, expressed her “shock” and highlighted his unwavering dedication to Bordeaux: “He carried his city in his heart and continued to serve it with all his energy.”

Édouard Philippe, also a confidant of Alain Juppé, learned of the news during a rally in Bordeaux. “Many of you here knew him and loved him. He was a longtime companion and an old friend,” he said emotionally.

Michel Barnier praised Florian’s commitment to Bordeaux and France, stating, “He loved his city as much as he loved his country. My heartfelt thoughts go out to his family and friends.”

Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau, also a member of LR, expressed his sadness over this “sudden loss,” describing Florian as “one of those elected officials deeply devoted to their territory, someone who saw politics as a way to serve others.”
